Why EDU links work

While it's true that almost any link from anyone will add something of value to your page popularity, it's more effective to get links from authoritative pages. Directory examples would include sites like www.Yahoo.com  and www.DMOZ.com.  Others like www.PBS.org , www.berkeley.edu or http://www.energy.gov  would be exceptional authoritative site links from anywhere on the domain or subdomain, since each has been assigned a PageRank of 9. Google & Yahoo tend to value both .edu links and .gov links more highly then traditional .com, .net, .org links. There are several reasons for this. There are far less .edu & .gov websites than .com,.net or .org websites, and you must be a registered educational institution or government agency to get one. Further, the EDU websites tend to be 10 years old and well established, with thousands of incoming links.
